Boulder County, CO Former Deputy Charged After Gunfire at HQ

Boulder, CO – A former Boulder County sheriff’s deputy faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after authorities allege he fired at the sheriff’s headquarters and later was linked to gunfire that damaged police vehicles in Broomfield early Monday.

According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, 40-year-old Tyler Boyd Reilly was taken into custody after a sheriff’s sergeant spotted him outside headquarters at approximately 1:08 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2026.

Investigators allege Reilly was armed with an AR-15-style rifle and fired multiple rounds into the headquarters entry area. Authorities said he did not gain entry and no personnel were inside the headquarters at the time. Deputies confronted Reilly outside and took him into custody.

Investigators later alleged Reilly had stopped at the Broomfield Police Department at 7 Descombes Drive and fired rounds at multiple police vehicles. No injuries were reported in either Boulder or Broomfield, and officials said there was no continuing threat to the public.

Reilly faces Boulder County charges including attempted first-degree burglary, felony menacing with a deadly weapon, attempted first-degree criminal trespass, criminal mischief and several misdemeanor counts.

Separate charges connected to the Broomfield incident include felony criminal mischief involving alleged damage between $100,000 and $1 million, prohibited use of weapons, reckless endangerment and other counts. Authorities also announced a second-degree assault on a peace officer charge stemming from an alleged incident at the Boulder County Jail after Reilly was taken into custody.

The sheriff’s office said Reilly previously worked in its jail and patrol divisions and resigned in May 2024 in lieu of termination for cause.

Officials said the investigation remains active and charges could change.

The charges are allegations, and Reilly is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
