Kentucky Weather Tonight: Damaging Winds, Flooding Threat

Louisville, KY – Residents across northern Kentucky and southern Indiana could face strong to severe thunderstorms tonight into Thursday, with damaging winds and localized flooding among the primary concerns.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, scattered showers and thunderstorms will approach the Ohio River from the northwest this evening ahead of a slow-moving cold front. Multiple rounds of showers and storms could continue late tonight and into Thursday.

The Weather Service said a few thunderstorms could become strong to severe, producing localized damaging wind gusts. Heavy rainfall could also lead to flooding in isolated locations.

Areas around Louisville, Elizabethtown and communities along and near the Ohio River are included in Wednesday's marginal risk, Level 1 of 5, for severe thunderstorms. The risk also extends into portions of southern Indiana, including areas near Evansville, Jasper, Corydon and Madison.

Forecasters cautioned that uncertainty remains over the strength of the storms. How quickly the cold front moves southeast will play an important role in determining how intense showers and thunderstorms become.

The Weather Service indicated confidence in severe weather occurring remains low as of Wednesday afternoon, but residents should continue monitoring forecasts because storms will be arriving during the evening and overnight hours.

Anyone with evening travel plans across the Louisville metro area, northern Kentucky or southern Indiana should be prepared for changing road conditions. Heavy downpours could reduce visibility and cause water to collect on roads.

Residents should also have a reliable way to receive weather warnings overnight and never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway.
