Lake County Crash Leaves One Dead Following Morning Collision

Lake County, Indiana – A fatal collision on the eastbound lanes of I-80/94 near the 7 mile-marker occurred on the morning of Monday, September 28, 2026. The incident, which took place in the vicinity of Burr Street, involved a 2016 Lincoln SUV and a semi-truck.

According to the responding troopers, authorities were dispatched to the scene of the crash at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026. Upon arrival, emergency responders found the 2016 Lincoln SUV overturned on its driver’s side in the south ditch. The female driver had been ejected during the wreck and was found lying on the ground next to the vehicle.

Initial reports confirmed that the female driver was alert and conscious at the scene, and she was able to communicate with the paramedics who arrived to assist her. The Gary Fire Department was tasked with transporting the victim to Northlake Hospital so she could receive emergency treatment for her injuries.

A preliminary investigation into the crash suggests that a semi traveling in the eastbound lanes made contact between its front left steer tire and the rear passenger side of the Lincoln. This impact caused the SUV to rotate to the right, leading the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The Lincoln then traveled into the south ditch, where it overturned and ejected the driver.

While the woman was receiving care at Northlake Hospital, her medical condition deteriorated. Despite the efforts of the medical staff to provide life-saving treatment, the woman died. The Lake County Coroner’s Office is responsible for the release of her identity, which was expected to be disclosed once the family completed a positive identification, a process scheduled for Monday morning, September 28, 2026.

Authorities have confirmed that the cause of the crash remains under active investigation. Investigators are working to determine the specific circumstances of how the initial contact occurred between the semi and the Lincoln SUV. Officials have not provided further details regarding the driver of the semi or the status of the investigation as of Monday, September 28, 2026.
