Maine Weather Alert: 100% of State Now in Drought as Severe Conditions Expand Along the Coast

Caribou, Maine – Every part of Maine is now experiencing drought conditions, with 16.02% of the state reaching severe drought and the National Weather Service asking residents to report impacts involving wells, crops, ponds and livestock.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou and the latest U.S. Drought Monitor, 100% of Maine is experiencing at least abnormally dry conditions. Moderate drought covers 77.37% of the state, while severe drought has expanded to 16.02%. No extreme or exceptional drought is shown.

The map indicates severe drought is concentrated primarily across portions of coastal and south-central Maine. Moderate drought extends across much of central, eastern and northern Maine, including areas closer to the Caribou weather service region.

Conditions have deteriorated from last week, when severe drought covered 13.73% of Maine. Three months ago, only 0.49% of the state was experiencing severe drought.

The Caribou weather service is seeking on-the-ground reports of dry lawns, low ponds, stressed crops and livestock impacts. Residents experiencing dry wells can also submit information through Maine's Dry Well Survey.

Those reports help meteorologists and hydrologists determine how the drought is affecting individual communities beyond what statewide maps can show. The weather service compiles drought information each Monday and Tuesday, making local observations particularly useful as officials track whether conditions continue to worsen.
