North Carolina Storms Could Bring Damaging Winds

Raleigh, North Carolina – Slow-moving storms could trigger flash flooding across central North Carolina from 3 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, especially in urban areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected Tuesday afternoon and evening. Locally heavy rain and a few strong to severe storms are possible.

Central North Carolina is under a Level 2 excessive rainfall risk. The Weather Service identifies flash flooding as a medium-level threat, with the greatest concern between 3 and 10 p.m.

Storms could move slowly and produce high rainfall rates. Some locations may receive repeated rounds of rain, increasing the potential for isolated flash flooding. Urban areas and places with poor drainage face the greatest concern.

Drivers around Raleigh and elsewhere across the Triangle should be prepared for water collecting on roads during heavier storms. Motorists should avoid flooded streets and find another route rather than attempting to drive through standing or moving water.

A few storms could also become strong to severe Tuesday afternoon. Damaging wind gusts are the primary severe weather concern identified in the Weather Service update, with the greatest risk across the western Piedmont.

The most significant weather impacts are expected during the afternoon and evening. Residents should monitor conditions through 10 p.m., particularly if repeated storms develop over Raleigh or surrounding communities.
