Northern Indiana under marginal risk for severe weather Wednesday

Northern Indiana – The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued a weather alert for Wednesday, September 9, 2026, warning of a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms. The potential for dangerous weather is primarily focused for areas along and south of US 6, with activity expected during the afternoon and evening hours.

According to meteorologists, there is a 40–70% chance of showers and storms developing across the region. While the overall threat is rated as level 1 of 5, a few of these storms could become strong to severe. The primary concern is damaging wind gusts, which could reach speeds of up to 60 mph. Currently, there is no threat of hail or tornadoes.

The NWS advised residents to stay weather-aware as conditions develop. Those with outdoor plans on Wednesday should have multiple ways to receive warnings and know where their safe space is located in case the storms escalate. The outlook for the remainder of the week shows a very limited setup for severe weather after Wednesday.
