South Bend, IN – On Saturday, September 19, 2026, around 7:30 p.m., the South Bend Police Department was advised by the Notre Dame Police Department of an individual seen with a firearm in the vicinity of Eddy Street Commons. Responding officers attempted to locate the subject; however, an individual matching the description was found unarmed at the south end of the complex.

While approximately 20 South Bend officers were working in the area following the initial report, a single gunshot was heard near the intersection of Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard. Responding officers quickly located a female victim who had sustained a non-life-threatening leg wound. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

During the same incident, a South Bend police officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury, which preliminary evidence suggests may have been caused by a ricochet from the gunfire. The officer received on-scene medical treatment.

The South Bend Police Department, alongside Notre Dame and St. Joseph County departments, secured the area surrounding the campus. The incident remains under active investigation by the South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit. Anyone with information is urged to contact Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP or visit p3tips.com/203.
