Springfield, IL: State Police issue homecoming safety guidance

Springfield, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP) issued a timely reminder to students and families on Thursday, September 17, 2026, urging responsible behavior throughout the current homecoming season. Officials emphasized that critical decisions made during these celebrations can have significant, long-term consequences for young drivers and their peers.

According to the Illinois State Police, data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in July 2026 highlights the vulnerability of young motorists. The findings show that drivers aged 15-20 represent 9% of all drivers involved in fatal traffic accidents. Statistics further suggest that 53% of young drivers killed in such crashes were not wearing seatbelts, and 29% had alcohol in their systems at the time of the incident.

Director Brendan F. Kelly stated that the department is working to curb these tragedies through a combination of increased traffic enforcement and educational initiatives. The agency is specifically targeting what officials call the "fatal four" violations: impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and a lack of proper seatbelt usage. Director Kelly encouraged parents to have candid conversations with their children about the dangers of substance use and the importance of never riding with an impaired driver.

Illinois maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding underage drinking. State law prohibits anyone under 21 from possessing or consuming alcohol, with penalties that include fines, citations, arrests, and the towing of vehicles. Furthermore, the state prohibits cell phone use for drivers under the age of 19, except in specific emergency situations.
