Wauconda, IL – A juvenile has been charged after an alleged bomb threat posted on TikTok triggered an evacuation and major police response at Wauconda High School in Lake County Wednesday night.

According to the Wauconda Police Department, officers received a report at approximately 7:42 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, concerning a possible bomb threat involving the high school. Students and staff participating in extracurricular activities were inside at the time.

Police immediately began evacuating the building while officers and detectives investigated the source and credibility of the alleged threat.

K-9 teams from Wauconda and assisting law enforcement agencies then conducted a thorough search of the school for explosives and unauthorized people, police said. No explosive devices, unauthorized individuals or other items of concern were located.

Authorities determined the building was safe and returned it to Wauconda Community Unit School District 118.

Detectives continued investigating Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. Police said they identified a juvenile allegedly responsible for the social media post.

The juvenile was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct, according to the department. Because the suspect is a juvenile, police did not release identifying information.

The department emphasized that a criminal charge is an allegation and does not constitute proof of guilt.

Police also warned that threats made through social media are investigated seriously and can result in criminal charges even when the person allegedly responsible does not intend for a threat to be carried out.

No physical threat was ultimately found at the school, authorities said.
