A new study examines how Missouri 988 counselors adjusted to nationwide changes after the service launched in 2022. Interviews with 28 workers found that transparent management supported morale, while counselors used clinical judgment when performance metrics, call limits and safety plans did not fit callers’ needs. The findings highlight how frontline expertise can improve crisis-care policies.
