DeKalb County, IL Man Sentenced to 12 Years for Attempted Murder

Kane County, IL – A 20-year-old DeKalb County man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder in a violent 2025 attack on a 71-year-old family member in Big Rock Township, west of Chicago.

According to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, Koda R. Uebel, 20, of Victor Township, agreed to the 12-year Illinois Department of Corrections sentence in exchange for his guilty plea to attempted first-degree murder, a Class X felony. Judge David Kliment accepted the plea.

Prosecutors said the attack happened during the early morning hours of Saturday, May 31, 2025, inside the victim's home in the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue.

According to facts presented in court, Uebel repeatedly punched, slapped, kicked, strangled and bit the 71-year-old woman. Other family members witnessed the attack through a home security camera and called 911.

Kane County sheriff's deputies arrived at approximately 12:06 a.m. Prosecutors said deputies could see Uebel striking the victim through a locked front door and heard him threaten to kill her.

Deputies forced their way inside and intervened. Prosecutors said Uebel then attacked deputies, prompting the deployment of a Taser. He continued resisting and bit one deputy before he was taken into custody.

The victim was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Under Illinois law, Uebel must serve at least 85% of the 12-year sentence. He will receive credit for 482 days already served in the Kane County Jail.

The Kane County State's Attorney's Office announced the sentence Monday, Sept. 28.
