Georgia gas prices up 11 cents

(The Center Square) – Motorists purchasing fuel in Georgia on Labor Day are paying 11 cents more than last week, according to AAA.

The average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $3.89 in Georgia, up 98 cents from this time last year.

"After a record-setting August, Labor Day weekend is shaping up to make history at the pump as well," said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Elevated crude oil prices and strong travel demand have combined to push fuel costs higher."

National gas prices broke a record for Labor Day. The national average is $4.14, up seven cents from last week. It's 32 cents higher than the previous Labor Day record of $3.82 in 2012, according to AAA.

In Georgia, the most expensive gas is in the Savannah area, where a gallon averages $3.96.

The cheapest fuel is in northwest Georgia near the Tennessee line at $3.83, according to AAA.

Georgia has the highest fuel cost among its surrounding states, except in Florida, where a gallon of gas is $3.91. South Carolina has the least expensive gas at $3.75 a gallon, followed by Alabama at $3.80, Tennessee at  $3.81 and North Carolina at $3.83.
