Lincoln County, TN – Officials Issue Warning on Online Child Safety

Lincoln County, Tennessee – The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is urging parents and guardians to be vigilant regarding the online safety of children. In a recent advisory, officials highlighted that the internet, including social media platforms, gaming sites, and messaging apps, has become a primary venue for predators to manipulate minors.

Authorities warn that predators often use fake profiles to gain a child's trust over weeks or months. Tactics may involve pressuring children to share nude images or personal information, which can later be used for blackmail or extortion. "One conversation today could prevent a lifetime of trauma tomorrow," the sheriff’s office stated in a recent public awareness release.

Parents are encouraged to have open, regular dialogues with their children about internet safety. Key recommendations include teaching children never to send sexually explicit photos, to avoid meeting individuals they met online without parental knowledge, and to be cautious about accepting friend requests from strangers. If a child expresses discomfort or is being targeted for sextortion, officials stress that they should be encouraged to report it without fear of being in trouble.

If a child is being threatened, law enforcement advises against paying any money or sending additional images. Instead, parents should save all available evidence, such as screenshots and usernames, block the offender, and report the matter to law enforcement immediately. Victims or witnesses can contact the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation or report suspected exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).
