Manteno Fire District Reports Busy Day With Two Emergency Incidents

Manteno, IL – The Manteno Community Fire Protection District faced a high-pressure situation on September 11, 2026, as first responders were forced to manage two significant emergency incidents within just 24 minutes of each other. The dual emergencies required the full mobilization of local firefighters, paramedics, and support from neighboring agencies to ensure the safety and coverage of the district.

According to the Manteno Community Fire Protection District, the first call arrived at 4:38 p.m. regarding a motorcycle crash located at the intersection of Route 45 and 10000 North Road. Emergency crews arrived on the scene to treat two injured patients. Both individuals were subsequently transported to local hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

While those teams were still active at the crash site, a second emergency alarm was dispatched at 5:02 p.m. for a residential structure fire occurring at 5161 West 9000 North Road. To address the blaze and maintain fire coverage across the rest of the district, the agency requested additional support through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, or MABAS. Upon their arrival at the residential address, firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions and immediately began suppression efforts. Crews remained on the scene for approximately two hours to bring the fire under control and performed subsequent overhaul operations to extinguish remaining hot spots.

During the intense firefighting operations, one member of the department suffered a non-life-threatening medical emergency. The firefighter was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. There were no other reports of injuries to civilians or other responders at the scene of the structure fire. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the fire district officials.

Chief Rick Petersen expressed his appreciation for the coordination required to handle the back-to-back incidents. He noted that the events highlight the dedication of the firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers, and mutual aid partners who supported the operation. The chief emphasized that the close timing of the two calls necessitated significant resource management to continue providing emergency coverage for the community.
