Merrillville, IN: INDOT announces upcoming I-65 construction closures

Merrillville, IN – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has issued an update regarding ongoing infrastructure projects along the I-65 corridor in Lake County. Starting Sunday, September 20, 2026, commuters should prepare for significant lane and ramp closures as crews undertake essential road repairs and bridge maintenance.

According to INDOT officials, the right lane of northbound I-65 will be closed at U.S. 30, along with the ramp from westbound U.S. 30 to northbound I-65. This portion of the project is expected to last for approximately six days. During this time, drivers are advised that the designated detour will require them to enter I-65 southbound and utilize the U.S. 231 interchange to turn around and access the northbound lanes.

The maintenance schedule also includes overnight lane closures in both directions on I-65 between 109th Avenue and U.S. 231. These closures are slated for weekdays between 4 p.m. and 6 a.m. for the next two weeks. These specific operations are designed to facilitate the removal of lane shifts at 113th Avenue and address necessary concrete repairs on the 113th Avenue center pier.

Further complicating local travel, the 113th Avenue bridge spanning I-65 will remain closed through the end of October. This closure is part of a larger bridge deck and partial superstructure replacement project. INDOT noted that lane closures will continue to occur on I-65 in that area as required by construction progress. Motorists are encouraged to plan for potential delays throughout the duration of these projects.
