Mokena Plans Community Shred Event and Food Drive for October

Mokena, IL – The Village of Mokena has announced an upcoming community outreach event featuring a free shredding session and a food drive, scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Mokena Front Street Metra Lot and is being co-hosted by State Representative Patrick Sheehan, Will County Board Member Jim Richmond, and Mayor George Metanias.

According to the organizers, the shredding service—provided by Shark Shredding and Document Management Services, Inc.—will be limited to two boxes per vehicle or will conclude once the truck reaches capacity. In addition to document destruction, the event will facilitate the collection of eyeglasses for the Mokena Lions Club, American flags for Mokena VFW 725, and non-perishable food items for the Frankfort Food Pantry.

Participants are instructed to place their materials in the trunk or back seat for easier removal by staff, and boxes will be returned to the vehicle once emptied. Organizers have specified that certain items, such as CDs, DVDs, hazardous materials, and hard-cover books, will not be accepted for shredding. A comprehensive list of requested food items for the pantry includes staples such as canned meats, pasta, and various household hygiene products.

This initiative highlights the village's commitment to providing valuable services while supporting local charitable efforts. Residents are encouraged to prepare their documents ahead of time and ensure all food donations are gathered according to the pantry’s "wish list" to maximize the event's impact on local families in need.
