Montana Weather Alert: 55 MPH Wind Gusts Could Disrupt I-90 Travel Monday

Billings, Montana – Wind gusts approaching 55 mph could make travel difficult along Interstate 90 and Highway 191 Monday as a cold front brings widespread westerly winds across southern Montana.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, breezy conditions will develop Sunday ahead of the front, with southeast wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph. A few strong thunderstorms are also possible across southeast Montana Sunday evening and overnight.

Conditions turn windier Monday. West wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph are expected along the foothills west of Billings, while most other locations could see gusts of 30 to 45 mph.

Big Timber could experience one of the strongest gusts, reaching around 52 mph Monday morning. Billings could reach 44 mph, while Livingston and Harlowton could see gusts near 41 mph. Gusts around 39 to 41 mph are possible in several other communities.

Drivers on I-90 and Highway 191 should prepare for abrupt crosswinds, particularly in high-profile vehicles such as semitrailers, campers and RVs. Residents should secure trash cans, patio furniture and other loose outdoor objects before Sunday night.

The overnight cold front will mark the transition to widespread west winds Monday, with cooler and unsettled conditions accompanying the system.
