Hastings, Nebraska – Central Nebraska residents should keep weather alerts active Friday night as isolated thunderstorms could produce quarter-size hail and wind gusts reaching 60 mph, even though most communities are expected to remain dry.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, thunderstorm chances range from 10% to 25% Friday night, with a marginal risk for severe weather. South winds of 15 to 25 mph will ease and turn northerly late Friday night, while temperatures fall into the 58-to-68-degree range.

Additional thunderstorms could affect Hastings, Grand Island and surrounding south-central Nebraska communities through the weekend. A few storms are possible Saturday morning before another chance develops overnight. Highs will range from 74 to 84 degrees.

Scattered morning thunderstorms return Sunday, followed by another chance overnight. Temperatures climb into the 71-to-87-degree range with east winds of 5 to 15 mph.

A stronger temperature surge arrives Monday. Highs across the Hastings weather service area could range from 83 to 97 degrees as south winds increase to 10 to 20 mph, with gusts around 25 mph. Scattered morning storms are possible before thunderstorms become likely during the evening.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items Friday night and have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings. Storm chances remain spotty through the weekend before becoming more widespread along a cold front Monday night.

  • Friday Night: 10%-25% thunderstorm chance, marginal severe risk, lows 58-68°. Quarter-size hail and 60 mph gusts possible with stronger storms.

  • Sunday: Scattered morning storms with redevelopment overnight. Highs 71-87°. East winds 5-15 mph.
  • Monday: Scattered morning storms, then thunderstorms likely during the evening. Highs 83-97°. South winds 10-20 mph, gusting near 25 mph.
