Virginia Weather Alert: 60+ MPH Wind Gusts Possible Thursday as Severe Storms Target Northern Virginia Through 11 P.M.

Richmond, Virginia – Storms capable of producing wind gusts above 60 mph could develop across the northern half of the region between 5 and 11 p.m. Thursday, creating an evening threat for drivers, outdoor events and areas vulnerable to power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible late Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. Gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall are the primary threats, with storms expected to move east at 15 to 20 mph.

The greatest severe weather potential covers the northern half of the Wakefield service area, including the Richmond region and areas toward Louisa and the Eastern Shore. The outlook places much of that area under a Level 1 of 5 marginal severe weather risk.

Isolated large hail is also possible, and the Weather Service indicates a non-zero tornado chance. Localized flooding could develop where heavy rain persists.

Residents should secure loose outdoor objects before storms arrive and keep phones charged in case winds disrupt electricity. Drivers around Richmond should be prepared for rapidly reduced visibility and water collecting on roads during heavier downpours.

Storms remain possible through 11 p.m. Thursday. Additional warnings could be issued quickly if individual thunderstorms intensify.
