Arvada, CO – A man in his 70s was shot in the back during an alleged road rage encounter on Interstate 70 near Arvada, and Jefferson County investigators are searching for the suspected shooter and a red sedan.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Lutheran Hospital staff alerted deputies after the wounded man arrived at the emergency department following the Sept. 29 shooting.

The victim told investigators he and his wife were returning to Arvada from a friend’s home in Golden when they allegedly became involved in an altercation with the driver of a red car. Authorities said the encounter happened as the couple traveled from Colfax Avenue onto the eastbound I-70 on-ramp.

According to the victim’s account provided by the Sheriff’s Office, the suspect allegedly pulled behind the couple’s vehicle and fired multiple rounds.

Deputies said the victims’ vehicle was struck by five bullets. One traveled through the vehicle and driver’s seat before striking the man in the back.

Despite his injury, the driver was able to continue to the hospital, authorities said. His injuries were described as not life-threatening. His wife, who was riding in the passenger seat, was not injured.

Investigators said they have limited information about the suspect’s vehicle beyond its description as a red four-door sedan. Authorities are working to locate and review surveillance footage that could help identify the vehicle.
