Burlington Area Frost Risk Rises Early Wednesday

Burlington, Vermont – Frost could develop early Wednesday as temperatures fall to 30 to 36 degrees, threatening sensitive outdoor plants.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday for the St. Lawrence Valley and portions of northern, central and southern Vermont. The greatest frost potential will be away from the warmer waters of Lake Champlain.

Temperatures between 30 and 36 degrees could allow frost to form across communities within the advisory area. The NWS map includes areas around Massena, Malone, Ogdensburg and Canton in northern New York, along with portions of Vermont near St. Albans, Newport, Montpelier, Barre and Springfield.

Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation, and plants may be killed if left uncovered. Residents with gardens, flowers or other vulnerable vegetation should cover tender plants with lightweight fabric before temperatures fall. Sensitive container plants should be brought indoors or placed under cover when practical.

Conditions near Lake Champlain may remain somewhat warmer, reducing the frost potential compared with communities farther from the lake. Even so, temperatures across the broader region will be low enough for residents to take precautions overnight.

The Frost Advisory remains in effect through 9 a.m. Wednesday. Residents should protect sensitive plants before the 2 a.m. start of the advisory and keep them covered through the coldest early-morning hours.
