Vermont Fall Begins With 60s and Patchy Frost

Burlington, Vermont – Fall begins Tuesday with clearing skies, highs mainly in the 60s and temperatures falling into the 30s to near 40 overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, high pressure centered north of the region will keep a dry, seasonably cool air mass across Vermont and northern New York through at least Thursday.

Clouds will clear Tuesday morning as drier air moves into the region, setting up several days of mostly sunny weather. Burlington is expected to reach about 64 degrees Tuesday, while Montpelier reaches around 60.

Other communities will remain similarly cool. Plattsburgh, New York, is expected to reach about 62 degrees Tuesday, while Newport, Vermont, reaches around 60. Springfield could climb to about 66.

The colder conditions arrive after sunset. Overnight lows will generally fall into the 30s to near 40 degrees, creating the potential for patchy frost in colder locations away from Lake Champlain.

Residents with frost-sensitive plants should pay attention to overnight temperatures, particularly in colder valleys and areas outside the moderating influence of the lake.

The dry stretch continues Wednesday and Thursday, with sunshine prevailing and precipitation chances remaining very low across most communities shown by the Weather Service.

Astronomical fall begins Tuesday evening, making the combination of cool nights and potential frost especially timely. However, the next meaningful opportunity for rain does not arrive until Friday.

The Weather Service is also monitoring a coastal system that could bring rain heading into the weekend. Details remain uncertain, so residents should watch for updates as the week progresses.
