Harford County, MD Crash: 81-Year-Old Pedestrian Dies in Bel Air

Bel Air, MD – An 81-year-old woman died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street near her Bel Air home Friday evening, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Harford County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded around 7:50 p.m. Friday to the 100 block of Royal Oak Drive for a crash involving a pedestrian.

Authorities identified the pedestrian as Joanne Philipovich, 81, of Bel Air. Deputies and emergency medical personnel immediately provided life-saving measures before she was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she later died.

Investigators said preliminary information indicates Philipovich was crossing the street in front of her home when the collision occurred.

The sheriff's office said the section of Royal Oak Drive where the crash happened does not have crosswalks or overhead lighting. At this stage of the investigation, authorities believe pedestrian error was a contributing factor.

The adult male driver, who also lives in the neighborhood, remained at the scene following the crash. Authorities said he was not cited for negligence and was released. His identity is not being disclosed.

Members of the Harford County Sheriff's Office Crash Team responded to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Authorities are now seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the crash or knows something that could assist investigators.
