Washington Fall Begins With Rain and Cool 50s to 70s

Washington, D.C. – Fall begins Tuesday with periods of rain and below-normal temperatures across the Washington-Baltimore region, with more rain Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, periods of rain will continue through Wednesday. Regional highs Tuesday will range from 56 to 73 degrees, with overnight lows from 48 to 61.

The broad temperature range reflects conditions across the Weather Service's coverage area, which stretches from the Washington and Baltimore metros into surrounding portions of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Wednesday will remain wet and cool. Highs across the region are expected to range from 51 to 69 degrees, followed by overnight temperatures between 48 and 60.

Commuters should plan for wet pavement during portions of both Tuesday and Wednesday. Drivers should allow additional stopping distance and watch for reduced visibility where rain becomes steadier, particularly during busier travel periods.

The rain coincides with Tuesday's arrival of astronomical fall, giving the Washington region a distinctly cooler and wetter start to the new season.

Conditions begin improving Thursday as rain chances decrease, although the Weather Service expects mostly cloudy skies and cool temperatures to persist. Thursday highs will range from 54 to 69 degrees.

The coolest overnight readings in the three-day outlook arrive Thursday night, when temperatures could range from 41 to 58 degrees across the broader region.

Residents should keep rain gear available through Wednesday and expect cool conditions even after precipitation chances decline. Thursday brings the first move toward drier weather, but clouds and below-normal temperatures will remain.
