New York City, NY Weather Alert: Sunday Showers Could Wet I-95 Before Monday’s 76°F Reset

New York – Gray skies and wet pavement could replace the weekend sunshine as an 80% rain chance reaches New York City Sunday. The biggest change arrives during the afternoon, when showers and a possible thunderstorm could disrupt travel and outdoor plans.

According to the National Weather Service, showers become likely Sunday, mainly before 2 p.m. A thunderstorm is also possible. New rainfall amounts between one-quarter and one-half inch are possible, with locally higher totals in thunderstorms.

Sunday reaches about 79 degrees, keeping the air mild despite the rain. South winds near 7 mph turn west during the afternoon.

Drivers should prepare for slick stretches of I-95, the FDR Drive and other heavily traveled city routes during periods of rain. Visibility can fall quickly beneath heavier showers. Pedestrians should keep umbrellas close, especially through the first half of Sunday.

The wet pattern does not last long.

Monday brings a sharp improvement across New York City. Sunshine returns with a high near 76 degrees. Skies remain mostly clear into early Tuesday as temperatures fall to around 60 degrees.

That cooler air will become increasingly noticeable. Tuesday stays sunny but reaches only about 73 degrees, a 6-degree drop from Sunday's high. It will feel crisp compared with the weekend, especially during the morning commute.

Wednesday reverses that trend. Sunshine pushes temperatures back toward 78 degrees, while Wednesday night stays partly cloudy near 67.

The extended outlook hints at another change Thursday. The National Weather Service shows a 30% chance of showers with a high near 81 degrees.
