Researchers at Washington University developed a microscopy system that simultaneously tracks individual neurons and oxygen delivery from red blood cells in awake mice. Combining two-photon and photoacoustic imaging could clarify how brain blood vessels meet neuronal demands and what happens when that coordination fails. The advance may aid research into stroke, neurodegenerative disease and other disorders.
