Rainier Standoff Ends in Surrender; Investigation Underway

Rainier, WA – The Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team is currently reviewing a tense law enforcement standoff that occurred in the 600 block of Nieland Loop SE on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The investigation is being led by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office with support from the Mason County and Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Offices, following reports of an incident involving the use of deadly force.

According to the official report, deputies were originally dispatched to the residence shortly after 9:00 p.m. to investigate a reported disturbance and check on the well-being of a person believed to be deceased. As deputies attempted to make entry, they were fired upon by a resident inside. Although the deputies returned fire, no injuries were caused by the initial exchange of gunfire; however, one deputy suffered a leg injury while attempting to retreat to safety.

A standoff ensued, lasting several hours, during which the suspect allegedly continued to fire at law enforcement officers and vehicles positioned outside the property. SWAT teams eventually deployed a chemical irritant into the home, and a specialized armored vehicle was used by the Washington State Patrol to gain access to the residence. The suspect eventually surrendered and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the shooting is comprehensive, involving the processing of the crime scene and a separate inquiry into the death of the person found in the home, who was reportedly receiving hospice care at the time.
