Tropical Weather Today: 6 Systems Tracked Across Atlantic, Pacific

Miami, FL – Tropical activity stretches across the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Wednesday morning, with the National Hurricane Center tracking six active or potential systems, including Hurricanes Polo and Odalys and a new disturbance with a high chance of development.

According to the National Hurricane Center's Wednesday morning tropical weather outlooks, Hurricane Polo is located a couple hundred miles offshore of southern Mexico, while Hurricane Odalys is well west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Tropical Depression Fifteen-E has also re-formed several hundred miles south-southeast of Hawaii's Big Island.

Another area of low pressure is expected to form within a couple of days south of the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Forecasters give that system a near-zero chance of formation during the next 48 hours but an 80% chance over seven days.

The NHC said a tropical depression is likely to form late this week or this weekend as the disturbance moves generally west-northwestward to northwestward, roughly parallel to Mexico's southern and southwestern coastline.

Meanwhile, forecasters are monitoring two areas in the Atlantic.

A tropical wave that recently moved off Africa has produced an area of low pressure about 600 miles from the Cabo Verde Islands. The system has a 30% chance of development within 48 hours and a 40% chance over seven days. Gusty winds and heavy rain could affect the Cabo Verde Islands by the end of the week.

Former Tropical Storm Fay is also being monitored about 800 miles southwest of the Azores. Its redevelopment chances are 20% through both 48 hours and seven days.

The NHC said stronger upper-level winds are expected to limit development of both Atlantic systems by the weekend.
