Winnipeg Police Museum Unveils Restored 1988 Dodge Diplomat Cruiser

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Police Museum has officially returned a historic piece of local law enforcement history to the road. After a painstaking nine-year restoration effort, the organization proudly unveiled its fully restored 1988 Dodge Diplomat at the Fabulous 50's Ford Club of Manitoba Car Show held on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
According to the museum, the journey began after staff discovered the abandoned cruiser in the front yard of a residence. The owner, who had purchased the vehicle at a city auction with the intent to restore it himself, was unable to complete the project and ultimately sold the car to the museum. The official acquisition took place on April 5, 2017, marking the beginning of a long road to recovery for the aging cruiser.
The restoration process was divided into two distinct phases. From 2017 through late 2019, volunteers and skilled mechanics focused on repairing the vehicle's body and interior, eventually reassembling it with period-accurate police equipment. The Diplomat made its public debut at the Santa Claus Parade in November 2019, though the team noted that mechanical work remained outstanding. The second phase, initiated in August 2024, saw the removal and rebuilding of the powertrain, including the differential and rear suspension. The team also opted to install a modern Holley Sniper II fuel-injection system and HyperSpark ignition to improve reliability.
The museum credits the success of the project to a dedicated team of restoration specialists, local businesses, and volunteers who donated their time and expertise. The vehicle successfully completed its engine break-in process in early September 2026, receiving final touches that included a new power steering pump and heater core. The restored cruiser will now serve as a functional representative of the Winnipeg Police Service at various community events throughout the region.
