Chicago, IL Arrest: Man Allegedly Points Stolen Gun at Bystanders


Chicago, IL – A 46-year-old man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly pointing a stolen handgun toward a vehicle on Chicago’s West Side, causing the people inside to flee, police announced Friday.
According to the Chicago Police Department, 15th District officers responded to a person-with-a-gun call near the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Laramie Avenue.
Police said the victims reported that Bobby Butts, 46, allegedly pointed a handgun toward their vehicle, prompting them to leave the area.
Officers said Butts initially attempted to flee before he was apprehended. Police recovered a handgun during the investigation and later determined the firearm had been reported stolen.
Authorities said the victims subsequently identified Butts to officers.
Butts was charged with four counts of aggravated assault involving the use of a deadly weapon, according to Chicago police.
He also faces one felony count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, one count of offender duty to register and one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon based on a previous conviction, police said.
The department described Butts as a convicted felon in its announcement.
Police did not report any injuries in the information released Friday. Additional details about when the confrontation occurred or the circumstances leading up to it were not immediately provided.
The charges are allegations. Butts is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
