Kane County, IL Sheriff Ron Hain Announces Nov. 1 Retirement

Kane County, IL – Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain will retire Nov. 1, ending a nearly 30-year law enforcement career and triggering a leadership change at the sheriff’s office.
According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Hain announced his retirement Friday, Oct. 2, saying he is stepping down to focus on his health and provide continuity of leadership for Kane County.
“Serving the people of Kane County has been the honor of my life,” Hain said in the announcement.
Hain joined the Kane County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy in March 2003 after previously serving with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, West Chicago Police Department and Waubonsee Campus Police.
He was first elected Kane County sheriff in November 2018 and reelected in 2022.
During his tenure, Hain implemented programs addressing substance abuse, mental health and recidivism. The sheriff’s office launched its “A Way Out” program in 2019 to connect people struggling with drug addiction with treatment and recovery services.
Hain also launched a social worker program in 2021 and later worked with the state’s attorney’s office to advocate for a Mental Health Unit in local hospitals. In 2023, the offices established the Child Exploitation Unit to investigate internet crimes against children.
Hain said he will decline media interviews while focusing on his health.
Under Illinois law, Hain has designated current Undersheriff Amy Johnson to fill the vacancy when his retirement takes effect, according to the announcement. The designation was filed with the county clerk.
The Kane County Board will then have 60 days from the time the vacancy opens to fill the position.
“This has been the honor of my life,” Hain said, thanking Kane County residents, employees and community partners.
