Iowa Weather Alert: 1+ Inch Rain Pockets and 60 MPH Winds Could Hit Northwest Iowa Monday

Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Pockets of more than 1 inch of rain could soak parts of the Sioux Falls region Monday, with the greatest heavy-rain concern focused across northwestern Iowa as thunderstorms move through the area.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, confidence is increasing in widespread Monday rain. Intermittent showers and potential thunderstorms will move through the region, producing moderate to heavy rainfall in some locations. Northwestern Iowa faces an increased risk for locally heavy totals.

The Weather Service also highlights a risk of wind gusts reaching 60 mph and hail around half-dollar size with stronger storms. Sioux City, Spencer and communities across northwestern Iowa are positioned closer to the heavier-rain corridor, while Sioux Falls and portions of southeastern South Dakota also face rain and thunderstorm chances.

Localized downpours could leave water on roads and reduce visibility. Drivers along Interstate 29 and other regional highways should prepare for rapidly changing conditions Monday and avoid roads covered by water.

Residents with outdoor activities should have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and identify sturdy shelter before thunderstorms arrive.

Rain coverage is expected to become more widespread Monday, and localized totals above 1 inch remain possible, particularly across northwestern Iowa. Additional warnings could follow if stronger thunderstorms or flooding develop.
