Northern Wisconsin Frost Could Form at 33 Degrees

Rhinelander, Wisconsin – Temperatures could fall to 33 degrees overnight, bringing frost that could damage or kill sensitive plants across the Northwoods.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a frost advisory takes effect at midnight and continues until 7 a.m. Tuesday for Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Florence and Forest counties.

The advisory includes Rhinelander, Eagle River, Merrill, Tomahawk, Crandon, Lac du Flambeau, Aurora, Commonwealth and Spread Eagle.

Temperatures as low as 33 degrees will allow frost to form during the overnight and early morning hours. Sensitive outdoor vegetation could suffer damage, while tender plants left uncovered may be killed.

The affected counties stretch across northern Wisconsin, including communities near the Michigan border and areas farther south around Rhinelander, Merrill and Tomahawk.

Residents with gardens, flowers or other cold-sensitive vegetation should finish preparations before midnight. The National Weather Service advises people to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

Covering vulnerable vegetation or moving potted plants to a protected location before temperatures fall can reduce exposure to frost.

The advisory continues through the early Tuesday morning hours and expires at 7 a.m. Residents across Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Florence and Forest counties should keep sensitive vegetation protected until the frost threat ends Tuesday morning.
