Yakima Police Use ALPR to Solve Hit-and-Run Case

Yakima, WA – The Yakima Police Department recently solved a hit-and-run collision with the assistance of modern investigative tools, including automatic license plate readers (ALPR). An investigation into an abandoned vehicle led authorities to arrest the car's owner, who had initially reported the vehicle as stolen.

According to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, the investigation began when police responded to a collision where the driver had fled the scene. Shortly after, the registered owner contacted the office to claim his vehicle had been stolen. A deputy, however, noted inconsistencies in the owner's story and observed that the owner appeared to have sustained injuries.

Based on these suspicions, investigators utilized Flock safety technology to gather evidence. Confronted with findings from the digital investigation, the owner allegedly admitted that he was driving at the time of the crash and had fled. He was subsequently placed under arrest.

Officials emphasize that this case highlights the effectiveness of using modern tools like ALPRs in public areas. The Sheriff's Office noted that such technologies allow for better evidence collection while operating under legal and ethical standards intended to protect privacy.
